This may seem completely crazy in the land of Las Vegas and Atlantic City casinos that flood our favorite sitcoms. Betting on sports matches is not necessarily easy in the United States. The green light from the authorities was only given six years ago. Only around thirty of them accept betting applications on mobile phones.
Another “sport” is also offered to those trying to earn money from their sofa: the American presidential election. An advertisement for an online betting site was even broadcast last weekend, during Donald Trump’s meeting at Madison Square Garden which caused a lot of ink to flow, but for other reasons. That day, more than $100 million was bet on the election!
The explosion of betting on the presidential election was not self-evident. A platform had to take legal action to obtain the right to offer odds on the outcome of the vote at the beginning of October. Tarek Mansour, the boss of the site owned by the company KalshiEX LLC, assured that this was a “mechanism of truth”.
Jeff Merkley, the senator from Oregon, assured that it would be a “huge mistake”, which would harm democracy. Guess who won?
“Bet on the American election. If you place $100 on Trump, you will win $175!” explained the advertisement broadcast in the New York den, after the Kalshi platform won in court. Right now, Kamala Harris is at 1.8/1, but that’s not all. We also find JD Vance at 150/1, Tim Walz at 175/1 and even a certain… Michelle Obama, listed at 649/1.
