The case is linked to data leaks – names, telephone numbers, passwords – and affects 3 billion Yahoo! users. around the world, including several million in Canada.

Anyone who has used Yahoo! – e-mail, pools athletes or others – between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2016 are members of the appeal.

The claim period in Canada ends on December 27 following the $20 million settlement that ended the class action in 2020.

Yahoo! refuses to acknowledge that it did not adequately protect its users’ information, but agrees to compensate them. The case is coming to an end and “time is running out to claim a refund,” said the administrator of the settlement, RicePoint, in a press release on Friday.

Affected users must go to the website dedicated to the collective action, fr.yahooclassaction.com, to make their complaint.

Up to $25,000 in certain cases

No supporting documents are required from those who make a category B claim, which entitles them to $125 for each of the three leaks that occurred in 2013, 2015 and 2016.

Each leak allows you to claim $25 per hour for up to five hours.

Another type of claim is possible and can reach up to $25,000 for “losses and expenses.” This is the Category A claim.

Affected users must provide proof in this case, such as for purchasing identity theft insurance or for fraud-related money loss following identity theft.

These expenses or losses must have occurred four months after Yahoo! of the notice regarding the three data leaks. These notices were sent in September 2016, December 2016 and February 2017.

The deadline to claim – December 27 – is the same for category A and category B. The amounts claimed will be paid during 2025 and could be lower if the number of claims is high.
