A mechanic in is in the sights of the authorities after the discovery of 70 car wrecks on his property.

In the locality of Escamps, located in Auxerrois (Yonne), a mechanic received a formal notice for having abandoned 70 car wrecks in the open airsurrounded by nature. Although he had already been warned before, he did not comply the injunction to clean the site.

Vehicles in poor condition

Ces car wrecks are piled up in the middle of the vegetation. However, it is neither an illegal dump nor a scrapyard, but a garage. The authorities therefore had to intervene. This happened on January 31, during a operation led by the Gendarmerie and the services of Dréal (Regional Directorate for the Environment, Planning and Housing).

Reported since 2021

During their intervention, the police discovered a mechanic working on the site. However, administratively, this place is classified as “facilities classified for environmental protection under section 2712 (Installation for storage, decontamination, dismantling or cutting up of end-of-life vehicles or various means of end-of-life transport)”. During the inspection, the authorities were particularly surprised by the number of vehicles stored. These 70 wrecks pose an environmental risk, especially since spare parts are scattered everywhere, without the mechanic having the necessary authorization. The mayor of the town, Yves Vecten (SE), declares: “This place does not respect the legislation, we cannot leave things like that in the environment. We can wonder if there are not dangerous products, we are near a stream, we do not don’t know if there could be juices, harmful substances that could get into the water.” The mechanic tries to justify himself. According to him, most of his vehicles are in working order and he is just waiting to “sell, repair or get rid of those that are no longer in good condition.” The legislation prohibits storing more than 10 end-of-life vehiclesconsidered wrecks. This owner therefore exceeds this limit. He now has three months to clean everything…
