In the doldrums, the European battery industry is experiencing production problems and is suffering from the slow takeoff of e-vehicle sales. Added to this are manufacturers’ hesitations about the technology to adopt.

We saw it at the Motor Show, which opened on Monday in Paris: on the European market, confusion reigns. If sales are falling and putting manufacturers in difficulty, it is largely because the transition to electric vehicles planned by the European Union from 2035 – with the ban on the sale of thermal engines – is punctuated by uncertainties: after having distributed bonuses to buyers, States back down; falling demand for electric cars drives up prices; and manufacturers are hesitant about which battery technology to adopt. The consequence is disastrous. In August, electric vehicle registrations in the EU plunged by 43.9%.

At the start of autumn 2024, it is the battery manufacturers who are bearing the brunt. The Swedish company Northvolt, supplier to Volkswagen – which holds 21% of its capital – and Volvo, seems on the verge of bankruptcy. After filing for bankruptcy…
