Officially announced on March 18, 2024, during Nvidia’s GTX 2024 keynote, the Blackwell GPU microarchitecture is entirely focused on generative AI applications. In his speech, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang noted that the new hardware is already supported and will be used in large-scale applications by giants such as Google, Microsoft, MetaopenAI, and Oracle. Now, Reuters reveals that Foxconn is building a factory large enough to meet demand for these new chips.

According to the aforementioned source (the link is in the Source(s) section, as usual), a senior Foxconn executive spoke earlier today about the fact that the company “built the largest manufacturing plant for the Nvidia GB200 chip”but did not provide details on its size or when it will begin producing the much-in-demand silicon for next-generation AI applications.

After mentioning “the largest GB200 production site on the planet”, Benjamin Ting, Foxconn’s senior vice president for the cloud enterprise solutions business group, said it’s not yet time to say where. When he addressed the issue of demand for this type of material, he called it “terribly huge” and, given the massive investments in AI revealed by the press in many parts of the world, he has not exaggerated at all.

At the end of this month, Amit Bahree will publish Generative AI in Action. This book, which will be released on Amazon in Kindle format and in paperback, can already be pre-ordered from $43.99.
