Inflation: prices are soaring

It is an increase that no longer surprises us, that of the price of olive oil. “It’s true that they have increased a lot. I compare a little more than some time ago and I changed the brand of olive oil. Four months ago, it was at 8.80 euros, there it went to almost 15 euros.”points out a customer.

The success of blended oils

The cause of this increase is the repeated drought in Spain, the leading olive oil producing country. As a result, this year, sales fell by 10% on the shelves. But can we do without this product? It’s not that simple according to the consumers we interviewed. “When I make a salad, I add olive oil, that’s obvious,” says a passerby.

Replacing the olive oil in our cupboards is one of the solutions to lower the bill. If its price has jumped by 20% in one year, that of rapeseed has decreased by 9% and it is even up to 14% less for sunflower oil. But you still need to know how to use them, because each recipe has its own oil. According to Pascale Hébel, consumption expert and associate director at C-Ways, the alternatives are numerous: “When we eat raw vegetables, we can replace it with walnut or hazelnut oil. And for cooking oils, we have a whole bunch of alternatives, sunflower oils, rapeseed oils, vegetable oils. ‘cheap peanuts.’

Mixed oils are another solution to avoid completely giving up the taste of olive. The liter is on average half the price of olive oil. “These are combined oils that we mix with olive and rapeseed oil and which are experiencing very strong growth since we recorded more than 40% of sales this year compared to what we sold in average the previous year”, explains in the TF1 8 p.m. video at the top of this article, Franck Lecêtre, commercial director of the industrial company Lesieur. All brands combined, combined oils are the only ones on the market to see their sales increase, more than 13%, in one year.
