EAACI Congress kicks off in Valencia, Spain

VALENCIA, Spain, June 2, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The EAACI International Congress kicked off with the slogan “Revolutionizing patient care through the power of data science.” Over the next four days, experts will discuss the latest advances in this high-impact area. Allergies, a significant public health problem, encompass a variety of conditions.

Drug allergy is a major adverse effect that can have serious consequences. “Antibiotics, particularly penicillin and its derivatives, are the drugs that most frequently cause allergic reactions,” explains Maria Jose Torres, general secretary of EAACI. “NSAIDs, radiological contrast agents and chemotherapeutic agents are also responsible for a significant proportion of reactions,” she says.

Asthma, especially when associated with obesity, has a significant impact on quality of life if not properly managed. “These two prevalent health problems considerably affect the quality of life of individuals,” underlines André Moreira, co-president of the scientific program of the congress.

Advances in allergy treatment are another major theme. As Stefano Del Giacco, president of the EAACI, explains: “in the field of personalized medicine, the identification of genetic variants associated with greater sensitivity to allergies and the use of specific biomarkers have improved care of certain types of allergies, allowing the development of more personalized treatments.”

“We are achieving excellent results in the application of immunotherapy to allergic rhinitis and asthma,” says Mübeccel Akdis, co-chair of the scientific program of the congress. “The same goes for food allergies, with treatment administered orally or the personalization of vaccines based on the patient’s immunological profile. »

Big Data in allergology “makes it possible to collect and analyze large quantities of clinical, genetic and environmental data, used to identify risk factors and allergy patterns,” says Mohamed Shamji, vice-president of the allergy congress. ‘EAACI. AI helps improve allergy diagnosis through advanced analysis of clinical data and plays a crucial role in the development of new treatments by identifying therapeutic targets and optimizing molecules. “We are experiencing a period of significant and promising progress, but not without challenges,” concludes Mr. Shamji.
