“It’s not a year for bosses”: the headache for Alsatian companies with the May bridges

It’s a milestone… What am I saying it’s a milestone? It’s a peninsula! There are even viaducts these May bridges that are coming.

First there is the first of May, a Wednesday, with a possible bridge provided that you have Thursday and Friday (or Monday, Tuesday). Then the Ascension looms, a bridge which allows, by taking only one day, to harvest five days of rest thanks to May 8 which this year also falls on a Wednesday! In short, this year is rather favorable for employees.

And this poses some organizational complications for businesses who adapt as best they can.

“A lot of business leaders tell me that they have given up on doing a lot of meetings. It will be a month with a lot fewer meetings, which is not a bad sign. From an industry perspective, when it It’s rates, the answer is more complex, it is prepared months in advance, there will be overtime which will be paid From the point of view of services and road transport, they will work less because they have. the obligation not to drive on public holidays But even if turnover falls, as it falls for everyone, the impact is rather positive for the employees of these companies. explains Sandrine Amrhein, president of Medef Alsace.

The industry most affected

The impact of this year’s May bridges is therefore greater for companies in the industrial sector.
This poses some organizational problems like at CTCI, 100 employees, based in Singrist, near Saverne in the Bas-Rhin. The company produces extruded plastics, with a machine that takes a long time to turn on or off.

We must therefore anticipate well in advance. “In an activity which is the extrusion of plastic materials, it is a very resource-consuming activity. For example, the machine for Monday morning, to start it, we need 5 hours of heating up, before we can start producing. Over two days, do 5 hours of heating at the cost of energy, it is smarter not to produce. Of the two weeks concerned by the bridges, we made the choice to stop a full week” explains David Leleu, the boss of the CTCI group. “One way or another, it’s an extra cost” he adds.

The boss therefore knows that he will produce less due to lack of labor too. And May will be a short month.

“It’s not a year for bosses” smiles David Leleu. Especially since we have to manage the May holidays. “There are the RTT, the holiday balances. We know that usually the first 15 days of May are weeks with very little work, at least at the administrative level. In general we try to maintain the level of production, but this year, with this configuration, it’s almost impossible” said the boss.

A handicap especially since the company also suffers foreign competition which is not impacted either by the May bridges or by increases in electricity prices. For CTCI, the energy bill now represents up to 20% of turnover, it has increased sixfold in three years.
