the market stabilizes in April 2024
The car market is stabilizing in . The month of April 2024 shows a slight rebound in the number of new vehicle registrations despite the drop in public aid. A stabilization which seems to be explained by the first deliveries of electric cars from social leasing.

An increase in the number of electric car registrations

The electric vehicle market in France continues to experience stable growth, with an increase in the number of new vehicle registrations in April 2024, which amounts to 146,877, which equates to 14,471 registrations more than ‘at the same period in 2023. According to the firm AAA Data, electric vehicles now represent 17% of the market. Three city cars dominate the French market: the Peugeot e-208 (3,185 registrations), the Peugeot e-2008 (2,164 registrations), and the Renault Twingo Electric (1,842 registrations). This positive trend is mainly supported by public aid. However, the ecological bonus having been reduced to 4,000 euros instead of 5,000 euros, the revival of the French market seems to be mainly due to the first deliveries of electric cars from the social leasing systema system which, we remind you, saw its number of files retained doubled (50,000 instead of 25,000).

A worrying arrival of Chinese manufacturers

Despite positive signs, the electric car market continues to face many challenges. In the first place : the price of new vehicles. The latter increased by 2%, thus showing an average price, excluding ecological bonus, of 41,998 euros. Comparatively, an electric car remains on average 14,800 euros more expensive than a gasoline car.

If the French market seems to be rebounding slightly, the European market shows a drop of 5.4% in the first quarter of 2024. A situation which is far from reassuring European manufacturers, who are faced with increased competitiveness on their soil. On your mind : the Chinese car manufacturer BYD. With its attractive prices, it has started the construction of its first factory in Hungary which should be operational by the year 2025. BYD plans to build a second or even a third on the soil of the Old Continent with a research and development center to benefit from European public aid for the purchase of a new electric vehicle.
