More than half of university hospitals refuse citizens

It is not only the McGill University Health Center (MUHC) and the University of Montreal Hospital Center (CHUM) that refuse services to the general population. According to the test carried out by QUB, it is also impossible to make an appointment at the CHU de Québec and at the Montreal Heart Institute (ICM).

On the ICM website, it is mentioned that you must be a “patient followed by a doctor from the establishment to have access to samples”.

The Journal reported Thursday that “several medical tests are no longer accessible to patients who live in 450 at the McGill University Health Center.”

Same thing for the CHUM, which even refuses customers located in the same postal code if they are not a hospital patient. According to the Journalthis situation would have been in place since 2021.

This directive made the founder of the L’Actuel clinic, Dr Réjean Thomas, jump.

“I have never seen this in 40 years of working with the CHUM. One of my patients was turned away for blood tests there. I was stunned. My clinic is less than 2 km from the CHUM,” he explains to Isabelle Maréchal, on QUB radio at 99.5 FM Montreal.

Dr Réjean Thomas recalls that hospitals are paid by “all Quebecers” and that it is “serious that our large hospitals refuse to be subject to article 9 of the Act respecting the governance of the health and social services system “.

The office of Minister of Health Christian Dubé mentioned to the QUB team that the reminder sent Thursday to all establishments aims “to ensure that all patients have access to care, regardless of their postal code.”
