(Ecofin Agency) – The mining sector is a major consumer of energy, particularly in Senegal which is home, among other things, to several active gold mines.

Wärtsilä Technology Group will supply motors and ancillary equipment for a 17 MW power plant being installed at the Boto gold mine, Senegal, according to a September 27 press release.

The order, which was booked by Wärtsilä in the first quarter of 2024, was placed by Africa Power Services (APS), the -based main contractor for the engineering, procurement and construction of the facility. It will operate with six Wärtsilä 32 engines, deliveries of which are expected to be completed by December 2024 for entry into service during the first quarter of 2025.

« The mine is located in an isolated location and is not connected to the electricity grid. This power plant is therefore crucial to its operations, and we needed to find a partner who could provide a reliable supply of electricity. Wärtsilä’s reputation is well established and the company offered the best equipment and the best delivery times for this fast-paced project.“, said Romain Darracq, sales support manager at APS.

The Boto project is located in the eastern part of Senegal, close to the borders of Mali and Guinea. It was recently acquired by the Moroccan group Managem present in 8 African countries. Boto has mineral reserves of 31.5 million tonnes of ore grading 1.6 g/t gold, or approximately 1,605,000 ounces.
