Morocco, a regional and continental pioneer in the field (conference)

In recent years, Morocco has established itself as a regional and continental pioneer in the field of renewable energies, said, Wednesday in Johannesburg, Ms. Hanaa Benkhair, Moroccan Parliamentary Advisor and member of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP).

Speaking in her capacity as a member of the PAP at the opening of the Green Hydrogen Summit, Ms. Benkhair presented Morocco’s offer for the development of hydrogen capacities, an initiative that demonstrates the Kingdom’s commitment to becoming a leader in this sector.

“We have built significant infrastructure in the solar and wind sectors and we are now positioning ourselves to play a leading role in the global green hydrogen economy,” the Afro-MP declared from the outset.

Morocco, she explained, has ideal conditions for the production of green hydrogen: exceptional sunshine, abundant wind resources and a strong political will to succeed in this energy transition.

“Morocco is not only ready but also open to national and international investors who wish to be part of this promising journey,” said the speaker, arguing that the country has taken an important step by publishing the first “Morocco Offer” for the development of green hydrogen capacities.

In the same vein, the Moroccan parliamentary advisor argued that this offer is more than a document, it is the result of a Strategic Vision aiming to position Morocco as a global hub for green hydrogen. It clearly defines the roles and responsibilities of the various players in the sector and sets out the criteria that investors must respect for their projects to be taken into account, she notes.

He added that this offer specifically targets integrated green hydrogen projects, covering the entire cycle from the production of renewable energy to the conversion and production of hydrogen, an energy source that represents the future of our world and offers a promising solution to the environmental challenges we face.

In the same vein, Ms. Benkhair noted that Morocco is focusing on large-scale industrial projects, with a minimum surface area of 10,000 hectares, reflecting its ambition to host major initiatives capable of transforming the energy landscape not only in the country, but also in the region and beyond.

“This initiative has already attracted growing interest. To date, we have received expressions of interest from more than a hundred investors, both national and international,” she boasts, noting that this confirms that Morocco is considered fertile ground for the development of green hydrogen projects.

The Afro-deputy also specified that the first preliminary contracts should be signed by the third quarter of 2024, thus marking the beginning of a new era for Morocco and for the global community engaged in the energy transition.

“Morocco is determined to play a central role in the transition to a green economy and we firmly believe that green hydrogen is a key piece of this puzzle,” she concluded.

The Green Hydrogen Summit brings together leaders, experts and innovators from around the world for two days in Johannesburg to discuss the importance of collaboration and a shared vision to drive the global energy transition.
