Signature of a memorandum of understanding relating to the coordination of public authorities with a view to the implementation of a sustainable gas infrastructure development program

A strategic and highly anticipated memorandum of understanding was signed on Tuesday March 26, 2024, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, between the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of the Economy and Finance, the Ministry of Equipment and Water and the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development for the launch of the gas infrastructure roadmap.

This protocol also brings together five public organizations and companies, namely: the National Ports Agency “ANP”, the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water “ONEE”, the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines “ONHYM”, the company Nador West Med SA “NWM”, as well as the Société Nationale des Autoroutes du Maroc “ADM”.

This protocol is a continuation of the constant commitment of the Kingdom of Morocco to the consolidation of its energy sovereignty, the decarbonization of its economy and connectivity in regional and global markets. It aims to strengthen the coordination of public authorities with a view to the accelerated implementation of a sustainable gas infrastructure development program.

The program, which will extend over several years, aims to provide the Kingdom with several entry points for the importation of liquefied natural gas (LNG), as well as natural gas storage and transport infrastructure. In the short term, it aims to support gas pipelines connecting domestic gas production basins to consumers, as well as the development of an LNG terminal at the port of Nador West Med and a new gas pipeline to connect the terminal to the Maghreb Gas Pipeline. Europe.

This program should ultimately strengthen the acceleration of the development of renewable energies, the deployment of Morocco’s offer for new sectors of green hydrogen and its derivatives, and the development of the Africa-Atlantic gas pipeline project.
