Book censorship is increasing in the USA. In several states, such as Florida and Utah, the list of banned Books continues to grow over the years.
With the arrival of Donald Trump as President of the United States, decrees are multiplying. Recognition of both sexes only, end to all DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) programs… A blank check is given to increase the restriction of freedoms.
Utah increases censorship
Pupils and students are not allowed to vape or bring certain electronic devices into schools and universities. From now on they are also no longer allowed to bring with them a personal copy of a book banned in the State.
There are currently 18 books banned statewide under a 2024 law.
If a school or school district considers a book to be “pornographic or indecent,” as defined in state code, that title is labeled “sensitive material.” The new law divides these categories into “objective sensitive material” and “subjective sensitive material”.
The frequently asked questions state: “These titles should not be brought to school or used for classroom activities, homework, or personal reading on school premises.”
It is up to schools and districts to create policies on how to handle these situations and possibly punishments.
No exclusion but still…
Davina Sauthoff, media specialist at the library of the state council, however, makes one point clear: “We are not asking teachers to look for these books, to rummage through backpacks and lockers. But if they notice, they can kindly ask the student to take the book home.”
She adds: “We don’t want there to be any confrontation or situation where students don’t feel welcomed and included in their school community. »
The 18 books banned in Utah
The list of banned books is incomprehensible. For example, we find “Oryx and Crake” by Margaret Atwood or several works by Sarah J. Maas.
