On Thursday evening, an explosion injured two police officers near a fence of a police building in the Wittenau district, north of Berlin. The incident, described as “serious”, occurred around 8:20 p.m. while the officers were carrying out a “routine security patrol”, Berlin police said on X.
The explosion, caused by an as yet unidentified object, seriously injured a police officer in the face and eyes. His colleague, for his part, was the victim of “sound trauma”. The two agents were quickly treated by medical services.
Criminal brigade investigation
“According to initial investigations, an unidentified object exploded,” said the police, who entrusted the investigation to the criminal brigade. No further details have been released at this time, a police spokesperson said. Berlin police have not yet established a link between this incident and the violence that occurred during the New Year celebrations, but the authorities remain on alert. A thorough investigation is underway to determine the exact causes and possible perpetrators of the explosion.
This incident occurs in a tense climate after a New Year’s Eve marked by violence in Germany. In Berlin, thirty police officers were injured, including one seriously by an illegally manufactured fireworks display. Authorities also reported five accidental deaths linked to the use of powerful fireworks and around 400 arrests in the capital.
