Exactly twenty years ago, Philippe Sollers (1936-2023) published in a now famous collection then directed by Jean-Claude Simoën a Venice lovers dictionary which has since become a model of its kind. Who better than Sollers could write such pages on the Serenissima? The author of Paradis knew her inside out. He set down his bags there for the first time in 1963, the start of a voluptuous, uninterrupted affair. Twice a year, he went there accompanied by the dedicatee of this dictionary, “La Grande Petite Jolie Belle Beauté”, meaning the novelist Dominique Rolin.
