The doctor Jean-Paul Guérard lives in Cerisy-la-Forêt (Manche), but he works as a general practitioner in Caen.
With over 40 years of experience, specialized in nutrition, osteopathy and sports medicine, holds a doctorate in medicine from the Faculty of Caen, he has just released a book: “An ideal meal for balanced health”.
Why this book, Doctor?
I diversified my activities since general medicine did not fully satisfy me and became interested in nutrition very early on. I have been researching since 1900. I had my first diploma in 1985, my last in 2015, but I am always updating and documenting myself. This book was born from my consultations. Improving health, in general, requires nutrition. You can eat an anti-inflammatory diet. We can also improve immunity by working on the microbiota or on many diseases with naturotherapy. This is what I constantly tell my patients.
Why don't you agree with the current diet?
The modern diet is taking us uphill in the wrong direction. I popularize scientific ideas validated by the WHO. Hippocrates said “Let your food be your medicine and your medicine be in your food”. A well-designed diet can improve or even transform our state of health. Biomechanical osteopathy and nutrition make a great mix, very interesting for patients. We are able to fight against musculoskeletal disorders in young athletes as well as in people who are advancing in time and who also need to take care of their joints.
Do you have some advice to give to your patients and readers?
To try to lose weight, it's simple, you have to avoid the glycemic ceiling in the morning. The modern Western breakfast is a disaster. It's a blood sugar bomb!
Our entire modern diet is designed only to lead us to major global epidemics such as diabetes, obesity, overweight and cardiovascular disease. You have to eat things that fit the body, but lighter.
I repeat, what is obvious to an informed nutritionist, we must stop refining cereals and consume more dried vegetables, as we did a few decades ago. Our grandparents consumed a lot more of it and they were much less sick! You just have to chew them well so that the microbiota gets used to the fibers of these vegetables which can cause bloating.
In my book, I offer 15 recipes to discover, for breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner.
Practical: Book “Your ideal meal for balanced health” by Doctor Jean-Paul Guérard published by Dauphin. Price €22.
