This national operation of speech therapists which resonates within the maternity wards of Reunion Island. Entitled “1 baby, 1 book”, it aims to communicate with babies from birth and to fight against overexposure to screens and ultimately against illiteracy.
Ania received her first book a few days after her birth. Laurie, his mother, was quick to try the book. This national initiative takes place once a year, which helps raise awareness among young parents about the language development of toddlers.
This operation is appreciated by Laurie, who gave birth to her first child. “I thought we had to wait a certain time before starting all this and to know that from the beginning we can start is nice.”
This system has several objectives: to combat overexposure to screens from a very young age and against illiteracy.
In Reunion, between 95,000 and 116,000 people are illiterate. “The book at the beginning for babies is to look at, to touch, to put in the mouth. Having your first experiences with the book, the drawings, the colors and it is an intermediary to be able to communicate and speak with your child from a young age. explains Lydie MARIN, president of the union of speech therapists in Reunion.
All these skills developed through sensory experiences then promote more complex learning such as language. An initiative to teach your newly born child to speak, funded by the Saint-Denis Rotary Club.
