New controversy surrounding the delivery of in . Tuesday, November 5, 2024, Amazon announced that the delivery of new books would again be free for its customers, provided they are delivered to the company's collection points, reports Capital .

The e-commerce giant specifies that it has a “vast network of more than 2,500 collection points throughout France”. These automatic lockers are often located in shopping centers or hypermarkets. Customers can thus avoid paying €3 for delivery for their books.

An illegal offer in France?

Since October 7, 2023, you have to pay an additional €3 for any delivery of new books below €35. From €35, Amazon's delivery costs drop to €0.01. Amazon has also filed an appeal against this measure. The Court of Justice of the European Union will have to rule on the subject.

The French Bookstore Union denounced Amazon's new offer, recalling that according to the law, delivery could only be free if the book was collected from a book retail store. “Is an Amazon locker a business in the eyes of the law?denounced Guillaume Husson, general delegate of the SLF. Is it enough to be in a hypermarket? […] to respect the law? »

Alerted on the subject, the Minister of Culture Rachida Dati announced Tuesday that she would contact the book mediator, responsible for resolving disputes concerning literary commerce. For its part, the SLF hopes that Amazon's new offer will be rejected. “It’s the extra drop of water in a bowl that has been overflowing for a very long time”denounced Guillaume Husson.
