The Montparnasse Tower is being transformed, here are the first images

It has been criticized since its construction in 1973. Perhaps she will finally experience her hour of glory. Collective New AOM bringing together three Parisian architectural agencies — Franklin AAzzi, Chartier Dalix and Hardel Le Bihan — won the international competition entitled “Demain Montparnasse” which aims to rework the look of the famous Montparnasse Tower. They stood out among 700 applications from the four corners of the world. A major project to change the appearance of a building 127,000 square meters.

Transform the entire Tower

What to expect ? Simply not recognizing the Montparnasse Tower. From inside and out, the 209 meter skyscraper height will get a makeover. No more obscurity due to dark windows which currently compose it. These will be replaced by transparent windowsmuch brighter.

If at present it can only accommodate 6,000 people, the work plans to double its capacity to make it accessible to 12,000 people thanks to hotels, restaurants, shops and other structures. The idea is also to break its verticality which stands out in the Parisian landscape, by the establishment of a huge garden at its summit. “ The redesign emphasizes the horizontal plane, putting an end to the vertical orientation of the tower which left it isolated », assures the architects to Deezen magazine.

From the project to ecological ambitions

Sustainability and ecological commitment are also at the heart of the project. Not only will a garden adorn the top of the tower with large greenhousesbut the electricity for the building will also be generated thanks to in the wind or in the sun notably via the installation of photovoltaic panels. Although the work should have started more than three years ago, no construction start date has yet been communicated.
