REVIEW – Between Pompeii and Vesuvius, the love between a young archaeologist and a man in the twilight of his life. An incandescent novel.
We must first say a few words about the writer: all of Jean-Noël Schifano’s work sings of Italy, and more particularly Naples – he dedicated a vibrant Love dictionary. The author of Desire for Italy is also a translator of Elsa Morante, of the greatest novels of Umberto Eco (The Name of the Rose, Foucault’s Pendulum…), Savinio, Svevo, Ferrante… Excuse me a little. He also directed the French Institute in Naples. And, inevitably, he became the only French author who is an honorary citizen of this city.
With this new title, Archeology of a love, it only continues the expression of a visceral – and contagious – attachment. Schifano tells the story of the passion between Daphné, a young archaeologist, and Giannatale, a man in the twilight of his life. For the writer with a Neapolitan heart, it cannot be a banal love story. The eras mingle, geography is a central character; and, of course, Naples is never far away. The setting is Pompeii, Vesuvius and the Phlegrean Fields…
