VSAs a coincidence of the calendar, or a carefully considered initiative, it is four days after World Book Day that the Old and Used Book Fair is held in Jonzac. The first is an annual event celebrated on April 23 and organized by UNESCO to promote reading. The second, organized by the Livres et plumes association of Saint-Sulpice-de-Royan, gives pride of place to works of a certain age, in the perfectly adapted setting of the Cloître des Carmes.

In total, 12 professionals from Charente, Charente-Maritime, Dordogne and Lot-et-Garonne will be present. “As in previous fairs, we will present a wide range of books ranging from everyday books to works for bibliophiles: old books, illustrated and modern illustrated books, first editions, 17th century bindings.e and XVIIIe centuries, regionalism, satirical newspapers, publishers’ covers, etc. The rehabilitation work on the Cloître des Carmes de Jonzac means that this year we were not able to welcome all of the usual participants but we hope to be able to return to a normal format next year,” indicates Jean-Luc Mourreau, member of the organizing association.

“Making the book known”

Last year, the Show welcomed around 550 visitors. “This year we hope to do as well if not better. Our objectives are to make the book known in all its aspects and to as many people as possible,” specifies Jean-Luc Mourreau. The show is therefore aimed at bibliophiles, all book lovers and the general public. No need to be a great enthusiast or a great reader to come and discover these magnificent cultural objects. In this age of hyper-connection, the ephemeral and the sensational, spending a few hours in contact with them can’t do any harm…

Jonzac old and second-hand book fair, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Cloître des Carmes. FREE ENTRANCE.
