An arson attack in a vacant building in the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce district forced the mobilization of more than a hundred firefighters on Sunday morning.

The fire started around 4:30 a.m. in an unoccupied three-story building located on rue Robert Burns, near chemin de la Côte-Saint-Luc, in the borough of Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de- Grace. Quickly, the alarms followed one another to reach the fifth alarm, the highest alert level of the Montreal Fire Safety Service (SIM).

“The fifth alarm was triggered because the fire spread to other floors,” said SIM spokesperson George Bele.

More than a hundred firefighters were called to the scene to put out the flames.

When the firefighters entered the building, they noticed several fires and determined that it was an arson, said Caroline Chèvrefils, spokesperson for the Police Department. the City of Montreal (SPVM).

The investigation was therefore transferred around midday to the police force who will analyze the scene when it is secure.

“The damage to the building is significant,” said Officer Chèvrefils, adding that no person was injured in this event.
