Hundreds gathered Thursday evening in Lawrence to mourn Carol Flaz, a mother whose body was found in Haverhill four days after she was last seen by her children. A neighbor was arrested in connection with the case. Flaz, 37, was reported missing Saturday morning.Linette Perez, Flaz’s mother, said she was contacted by her grandchildren. “Right about 9:30, the 9-year-old daughter started calling her and said, ‘Grandma, I’m scared. I haven’t seen my mom in three hours,'” an interpreter said on behalf of Perez. “The kids had never been left alone.” Investigators found her body on Tuesday in the wooded area near Winnekenni Castle in Kenoza Lake Conservation Area in Haverhill.Christian Montero, 35, a resident of the same Lawrence apartment building, was arrested on a charge of witness intimidation and misleading the investigation. Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker said he expected the charges would be upgraded to murder after the medical examination is complete.During Thursday’s emotional vigil, Flaz was remembered as a daughter, mother, sister, friend, and a well-loved home health aide.”All her clients remember her as a lovely person and she built a good relationship with all of them,” said Denis Vasquez, Flaz’s employer at Best Home Healthcare.”I continue to support, the city continues to support the family,” said Mayor Brian DePena. “The whole community gets together and continues to support the family.” Also Thursday, members of Flaz’s family thanked investigators for their commitment to the case.
