Eddie Dunbar can already be happy with his Vuelta a Espana thanks to the stage victory on stage 11, but now that he’s clearly found a very good shape in the last week of the race, he’d also like to attack a top-10 placing in the GC.
On the nineteenth stage, the Irishman from Jayco AlUla put up a brave fight against the top riders in the general classifcation to arrive 7th on top of the steep Alto de Moncalvillo. Dunbar remains 13th overall, but today he’s closed nearly two minutes off four-minute deficit to Adam Yates whose 12th spot overall will be targeted.
“The guys did a really good job all day, keeping me out of the wind. We sat in a good position all day, then they did a super job in the run-in,” Dunbar said after the stage. “Got in the middle position, didn’t have to use much energy.”
When Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe train hit the front at the foot of Alto de Moncalvillo, nobody was able to react, Dunbar included. The Irishman was even quite stunned by such display of power. “Obviously Roglic was on a high level today, the whole team was, it was pretty impressive but yeah I was around the other guys which was nice.”
