Wheelchair sprinter Maxime Carabin qualified impressively for the final of the 400 metres at the Paralympic Games in Paris on Friday in the pouring rain at the Stade de France. The 23-year-old from Liège won the first series in his T52 class in 54.48, a new Paralympic record.

Carabin thus qualified for tonight’s final (at 19:14) without any problems. The closest pursuer in his series, Swiss Fabian Blum (1:04.08), finished almost ten seconds behind him. Carabin clocked the fastest time of all eleven participants. The second fastest time was set by Japanese Tomoki Sato, with 58.04, the winner of the second series. The top three in each of the two series and the two best losing times qualified for the final.

Our compatriot is a two-time reigning world champion in the 400 meters in the T52 class. Earlier this year he improved his own world record to 52.00.

Carabin will be competing in his first Paralympic Games in Paris. He will also be competing in the 100 metres next Thursday (series) and possibly Friday (final). He is also the reigning two-time world champion and the big favourite for that distance. The wheeler was elected Paralympian of the Year at the Sports Gala last year.
