On the eve of the implementation of the new standards of the “Real ID” program, Kristi Noem, American secretary for internal security, announces that adjustments will be made for travelers without this identity document. She clarified these points during her testimony to the Credit Commission of the House of Representatives.
Although the program officially takes effect this Wednesday, May 7, Noem assured that travelers without “Real ID” will always be able to take the plane thanks to tolerance measures established in airports. If they have no conforming identity, they will be oriented towards an alternative queue for an additional verification, but will still be able to embark, “she said.
Currently, around 81 % of air passengers in the United States would already have an identity document in accordance with new requirements. The “Real ID” program, validated by Congress in 2005, requires the delivery of driving license or identity cards according to rigorous federal standards, aimed at minimizing document fraud and optimizing air transport safety.
