In 19 cities in France, including Massy, environmentally friendly Muslims have picked up waste in the streets to draw attention to the importance of cleanliness.
On May 3 and 4, French Muslim citizens organized an event entitled “4th inter-mosques march for cleanliness” on the initiative of 19 mosques, including the Great Mosque of Massy, in Île-de-France.
Volunteer Muslims, including children, participated in the event organized in 19 cities to raise awareness of the importance of cleanliness.
At the initiative of the Great Mosque of Massy, known as the first ecological mosque of the country, Muslim citizens have picked up waste around mosques and in the streets for about three and a half hours.
Another citizen offered cakes and cookies to the participants of the environmental event.
The mayor of Massy, Nicolas Samsoen, thanked the participants in this initiative.
– “Clean the world and take care of it”
Amelle Miri, a volunteer at the Great Mosque of Massy, explained to the AA correspondent that the Mosque youth commission has been organizing cleaning activities in the city for two years.
“We generally do it between the two hours of prayer, in order to have time to collect more garbage,” said Miri, adding that the special weekend event is organized with many mosques.
Miri said they started organizing this types of events when time has improved, adding that their goal is to transmit the message: “Cleaning the world and taking care of it”.
– “Islam emphasizes cleanliness”
Bilal Abdelouahed, 26, who participated in the event, said that the volunteers should be taken as an example and added: “Islam attaches great importance to cleanliness”.
Stressing the need to take care of the world, he continued: “As you can see, the elderly and young people clean the city”.
The young Bilal said that, according to Islam, an object that constitutes a nuisance for people must be removed from the road.
– “It is important to teach children to leave the environment clean”
Safa Mrabet said he participated in this event with his two children in order to show that it is important to leave the city clean: “This (cleanliness) is part of our religion.
Mrabet said that it was important to teach children not to throw a trash and leave the environment clean for those who will come after them.
– The first ecological mosque of the country in Massy
The large Massy mosque, built between 2010-2019, allows effective use of energy resources thanks to double insulation of walls, a floor heating system, a dome, a minaret and special glass windows and LED lamps for lighting.
The mosque, whose ablution rooms are equipped with sensor taps, is cleaned with stored rainwater and surrounding green spaces are irrigated.
The mosque roof is covered with a vegetable coating which prevents loss of energy and heat and produces oxygen.
The mosque, whose total cost amounts to 4.5 million euros, was built thanks to the donations of Muslims in Massy and France.
