A shock for Friedrich Merz. The curator failed, Tuesday, May 6, to everyone’s surprise, to be elected German Chancellor in the first round by the deputies. On paper, he could have a sufficient majority, thanks to the elected officials of his camp and the social democrats with whom he intends to govern in coalition. Friedrich Merz was finally elected an absolute majority during his second attempt, with 325 votes out of a total of 630 deputies sitting in the Bundestag.
-In the first round, the head of the CDU had only obtained 310 votes out of 621 expressed and 630 deputies in total, announced the president of the Bundestag. It would have taken him 316 to be elected. After his success in the second round, the curator was confirmed tenth Chancellor of modern Germany by President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
After the surprise of the morning, the alternative far right party for Germany (AFD) had called for new legislative elections in Germany. “We are ready to assume government responsibility. (…) Mr. Merz should resign immediately”said Alice Weidel, co -director of training in second position in the legislative elections of February 23.
Winning without glory of this ballot, Friedrich Merz will have to face huge challenges at the head of Germany. The first European economy is at a time of geopolitical tilting, with a Europe that seeks to free itself from the military supervision of an American ally that has become unpredictable. In addition, Germany has been moving in economic tire since 2018.
