Some 70 people fell into the water when the two boats capsized on a river in Qianxi, in the province of Guizhou, Xinhua said, quoting local authorities.
On Sunday evening, the emergency services were looking for 14 people.
Chinese President Xi Jinping called to deploy “all efforts” to find the missing and treat the wounded, added Xinhua.
XI also “stressed the importance of strengthening safety measures in tourist attractions” and other “major public places”, said the agency.
Deputy Prime Minister Zhang Guoqing was sent to the site to supervise rescue operations.
This accident occurs a little more than two months after the death of eleven people, in the province of Hunan (center), in the collision between a boat carrying passengers and another specialized in cleaning traces of hydrocarbon.
