FIGAROVOX/TRIBUNE – The Belgian public channel decided not to broadcast live the American president’s inauguration speech, defending itself in retrospect of any censorship. This choice reveals the persistence of the “sanitary cordon” in Wallonia, deplores Belgian honorary senator Alain Destexhe.

Alain Destexhe is a researcher at the Gatestone Institute, an American conservative think tank, Belgian honorary senator and former president of the International Crisis Group.


The French sometimes have the opportunity to discover the desolation of the French-speaking Belgian media landscape. On CNews, Pascal Praud recently made fun of RTBF, the Belgian public channel. Alone in the world, it broadcast Donald Trump’s inaugural speech with a “slight shift to take time for analysis” because, according to the young deputy editorial director, Trump had “made racist, far-right, xenophobic and incitement to hatred remarks”. This announcement, made in a tone marked by evidence and good conscience, was followed without any humor by the precision that he “wasn’t a question of censorship” !

In reality, censorship is indeed practiced by the French-speaking Belgian media, which arrogate this right to itself when it comes to combating what they refer to as the “extreme right”…
