As she prepared, like every year, to receive the public at her home, in her workshop, on the occasion of the event Artists open their doorsinitiated by the Metropolis, Ysabelle Pétrel-Roby received, unexpectedly, an invitation to come and exhibit his work at the Moulin de la Pannevert, in Rouen (Seine-Maritime)… and she could not resist the call of this place which is close to her heart.

“I like the simple side of this place, which seduces me and is one of those little true joys in life,” confides the painter. And for this exhibition, entitled Natural, the artist has, for once, chosen to decline all a range of green.

Green galore…

“It was my Louise, my daughter, who inspired me with this color,” confides Ysabelle Pétrel-Roby, usually more versed in blue, her favorite color. But she does not refuse any experience and above all, hates the idea of locking herself in a box: with the painter, translates an expression and a desire to exchange with others.

“In one of the paintings that I am going to exhibit, there are around ten greens… I mixed a lot, lots of colors together. I love working with complementary colors, green and red for this canvas in this case,” says Ysabelle Pétrel-Roby, who has fun specifying that at the start, once her Japanese paper was placed on the linen canvas , it was entirely red, before becoming, once the work was completed, composed of a multitude of greens. The magic of colors in short.

The artist makes her own colors with pigments

“For my paintings, the color does not come out of a tube: I do my own colors with pigments. And little by little, I add sand, earth, or even ground eggshells… this is how my paintings take shape,” continues the artist, whose work is obviously far from be academic.

In her workshop, where she works mostly at night following her inspirations which sometimes arise from a dream, she enjoys mixing materials, touching them, kneading them to ultimately create atmospheres where everyone feels what they want, depending on his moods and his way of understanding the world around him.

Exhibit to transmit and exchange

By exhibiting at the Moulin de la Pannevert, Ysabelle Pétrel-Roby knows in advance that she will give herself “a breather”, and a possibility of exchange with the public, in this intimate place.

Selling, for me, is not the main thing, although of course, it is the icing on the cake when someone buys a painting from me. But here, I come to transmit colors, a vision of life. Exhibiting gives me a natural energy that people also give me when they are touched by my paintings.

Workshops to transmit

In the forty years that she has been painting, Ysabelle Roby-Pétrel has in any case done everything possible to transmit: thus, she organizes numerous workshops, “to bring something to others, while expressing my emotions”. She works in particular with the visually impaired, which provides her with very rich exchanges, but also, every week, she goes to Buchy, on Wednesdays, for workshops with children, from the age of four, with the Art Loc'Halles association… there is no age to confront artistic expression.
