The Gustave Caillebotte Exhibition is revealed in Paris at the Musée d’Orsay – photos

We set off to discover the exhibition Gustave Caillebotte. Painting men au Orsay museum. An exhibition which reveals the artist’s fascination with male figures and portraits of men. This presentation, produced in collaboration with the J. Paul Getty Museum of Los Angeles and theArt Institute from Chicagoreveals nearly 70 works, including the most important paintings of figures of Caillebotteas well as pastels, drawings, photographs and archival documents.

The exhibition, which opens to us from October 8, 2024 to January 19, 2025, coincides with the 130th anniversary of Caillebotte’s death and the bequest of his collection of impressionist paintings to the State. This is a unique opportunity to rediscover the artist through the prism of 19th century masculinities. Caillebotte, in his realistic approach, captured the men around him and his immediate environment, from urban workers to sailors, including scenes of daily life like the man on the balcony or the naked man at his toilet.

This project was inspired by the recent acquisition of two major works by Caillebotte by the J. Paul Getty Museum (“Young man at his window”) and the Orsay museum (“Boat part”), as well as the loan of “ Paris street, rainy weather » by theArt Institute from Chicago. These acquisitions allow us to revisit the themes dear to the artist and highlight the radical modernity of his works.

Caillebotte is often seen as an attentive observer of the social and urban transformations of his time. His paintings question the social and sexual order in an era marked by triumphant virility and republican fraternity. Beyond his identity as a young and rich Parisian single man, he offers a profound reflection on the condition masculineintegrating new figures into his paintings such as the urban worker and the sportsman.

In addition to this exhibition, the Orsay museum will temporarily hang all of the works from the Caillebotte legacy in one of the rooms of the permanent exhibition. This hanging will allow us to relive the opening of the “Caillebotte room” at the Luxembourg Museum in 1897, thus offering a complete vision of the artist’s contribution to l’impressionnisme and modernity.

If you want to visit the exhibition, consider book online upstream. The museum is closed on Mondays. It is open from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from Tuesday to Sunday, with a late night on Thursday until 9:45 p.m. for a quieter experience. Expect €16 at full price and €13 at a time-stamped reduced rate. For late nights, the price is €12. Another good plan to know is that the entrance is free for under 18s and the less than 26 ans EU residents.
