CULTURE – In a word: dizzying. Francis Ford Coppola unveiled on Saturday a first excerpt from Megalopolishis next film in competition at the Cannes Film Festival. As you can see in the video at the top of this article, the excerpt presents a scene played by Adam Driver, at the top of a skyscraper in a city reminiscent of New York. The actor seems ready to throw himself into the void, but escapes at the last moment, as if he had the power to influence the course of time.
The day chosen to release these images is not due to chance: May 4 should in fact have marked the 88th birthday of Francis Ford Coppola’s wife, Eleanor Coppola. “‘Megalopolis’ has always been a film dedicated to my dear wife, Eleanor. I was really hoping to celebrate her birthday with her this May 4th. But, unfortunately, that’s not the case, so let me share with everyone a gift from him.”wrote the cinema giant, 85 years old, by sharing the extract of the film on his account Instagram.
Eleanor and Francis Ford Coppola were married for 61 years, with Eleanor accompanying her husband on numerous film sets throughout his long career. Documentarian, artist, and writer, she died at the beginning of April at the age of 87.
A return after 13 years of absence
This feature film, with a budget of more than 100 million dollars according to the American press, revolves around the destruction of a megalopolis and a reconstruction which takes place between an architect and the mayor of the city.
Forty-five years later Apocalypse Nowwhich earned him a second Palme d’Or, the American director will be one of the main attractions on the Croisette this year (May 14 to 25), he who had not directed a feature film since Twixtreleased in 2011.
Also left the Cannes Film Festival with the supreme award for Secret Conversation in 1974, Francis Ford Coppola is this year in the running against 21 other films, which will be decided by a jury chaired by Greta Gerwig (barbie). In 2024, he could thus become the first director to obtain three Palmes d’Or.
