A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck a region of southwest Mexico on Sunday, the United States Institute of Geophysics (USGS) said, with no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
The epicenter of the quake was located eight kilometers from Coalcoman de Vazquez Pallares, a municipality of around 20,000 inhabitants located some 600 kilometers west of the capital Mexico City.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 86.2 km.
Mexico’s President, Claudia Sheinbaum, said on
Mexico sits on five tectonic plates, making it one of the most vulnerable countries to earthquakes, especially on the Pacific coast.
In 1985, a magnitude 8.1 earthquake devastated much of central and southern Mexico, killing thousands and causing severe damage to Mexico City.
On September 19, 2017, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake killed 369 people, most of them in the capital. On the same day in 2022, central Mexico was hit by another earthquake, just hours after millions of people participated in a safety exercise simulating an earthquake.
