A few days before Christmas, the two European commissioners Maria Luis Albuquerque and Valdis Dombrovskis, responsible for Finance and Productivity respectively, received a letter from Berlin. The letter is signed by four ministers of the outgoing government, starting with the Green Robert Habeck, responsible for the Economy and Climate.
After recalling its support in principle for a more “sustainable” European economy, the German executive is asking Brussels to simplify its requirements in this area as quickly as possible. Current standards provide for up to “more than 1000 data points”, argue the ministers, a burden which weighs too heavily on economic players, starting with SMEs. According to them, “a significant reduction in the content of CSRD sustainability reports is necessary in order to avoid unnecessary burden on companies”.
