We had often wondered how political leaders, apart from those of the National Rally, would react when the day came to the disappearance of Jean-Marie Le Pen, this “monster” of French political life who died on January 7. It was difficult for them to remain silent: Jean-Marie Le Pen, MP for the first time in 1956, European parliamentarian for more than thirty years, president from 1972 to 2011 of the National Front which he had co-founded, and qualified for the second turn of the presidential election against Jacques Chirac in 2002, had one of the longest political careers.
The President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, in a press release, evokes a “historic figure of the extreme right” and his “role in the public life of our country for almost 70 years”. Without taking sides on the merits, he adds that Jean-Marie Le Pen “is now subject to the judgment of History”.
