Ultranationalist Romanian presidential candidate Calin Georgescu has appealed to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) to challenge the cancellation of the vote, his lawyer announced on Thursday, cited by local media. To everyone’s surprise, this 62-year-old and until then little-known critic of the European Union came first in the first round of the election at the end of November, sweeping aside the candidates from the government parties.

Faced with suspicions of Russian interference in favor of this former senior official, the Romanian Constitutional Court canceled the presidential election two days before the second round, scheduled for December 8. Authorities later declassified intelligence documents supporting the accusations against TikTok.

According to these reports, the Chinese social network would have notably allowed the user Bogdan Peshir to make payments of 381,000 dollars (361,000 euros) between October 24 and November 24, the day of the first round of the election, to Internet users helping to promote the far-right candidate.

Dismissed at the end of December by the Romanian justice system

Calin Georgescu now wants the ECHR to force the Romanian authorities to reverse the cancellation of the first round and force them to organize a second round. He has already tried to challenge the cancellation of the elections before his country’s courts, but was rejected at the end of December by an appeals court in Bucharest. The presidential candidate can still appeal to the Romanian Supreme Court.

Coming out of nowhere after a viral campaign on TikTok, he had to face the pro-European centrist Elena Lasconi, also self-proclaimed “anti-system” and who was rising in the polls.

Moscow is suspected of having orchestrated this campaign with a view to electing a candidate who declares himself in favor of a total cessation of military aid paid to Ukraine. Russia invaded its neighbor on February 24, 2022 and fighting has continued since then.
