US President Joe Biden has approved military aid of $571 million (510 million Swiss francs) to Taiwan, the White House announced on Friday.
Outgoing President Joe Biden asked Secretary of State Antony Blinken to allow the sending of military “articles and services” in order to “provide assistance to Taiwan,” the White House said in a statement.
No further details have been made public about this envelope. In September, Joe Biden had already approved aid of 567 million dollars (506 million Swiss francs).
Without giving further details on the additional aid granted, the Taiwanese Ministry of Defense thanked the United States for “its firm security commitment to Taiwan”.
Military pressure intensified by Beijing
Taiwan claimed last week that China had carried out a massive naval deployment near its waters, citing “nearly 90” ships. This has not been confirmed by Beijing.
Several billion dollars have been allocated to Taiwan, an archipelago of 23 million inhabitants that China considers one of its provinces.
Beijing has intensified military and political pressure on Taipei in recent years, regularly sending warships and fighter planes around Taiwan. Beijing regularly opposes American support for Taiwan.
