Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Foreign Affairs for African Cooperation and Moroccans living abroad, Nasser Bourita during the AU PSC meeting on “the situation in Somalia and post-ATMIS security arrangements”, the Mission Permanent Representative of the Kingdom to the AU and the UNECA noted that the current situation in Somalia, marked by the persistence of the terrorist threat, combined with the devastating and recurring effects of natural disasters, calls for the imperative of remain mobilized, in a spirit of solidarity, in order to consolidate the progress made and pave the way for lasting stability in this country.
She also reaffirmed Morocco’s constant support for the Somali government, the African Union as well as all initiatives aimed at eradicating the growing transnational threats which jeopardize the security and stability of the region.
The Moroccan delegation welcomed the commitment of the countries of the region to a lasting solution to the crisis, stressing that this regional effort must be sustained and accompanied by constant support from the AU and the UN as well as partners, to overcome the persistent threat and put the country and the sub-region on the path to progress and stability.
In this regard, the Moroccan delegation emphasized the need to ensure the mobilization of funding essential for a successful transition to the new AU mission in Somalia AUSSOM (AU Support and Stabilization Mission). in Somalia) and reiterated the imperative for international cooperation and support through the contribution of partners and other donors, as well as through in-kind contributions that can be provided by Member States and contributions UN statutory provisions, in order to ensure predictable and sustainable funding for the post-ATMIS mission.
The Moroccan delegation reiterated the relevance of the effective establishment of a holistic and comprehensive approach at the national, regional and continental levels while respecting the national sovereignty and unity of Somalia, while insisting that any process of Peace in Somalia requires the implementation of a multidimensional approach based on the intersection of peace, security and development.
She paid tribute to the efforts undertaken by ATMIS, whose mandate will end on December 31, and reaffirmed her constant determination to support continental and UN efforts to restore peace and stability and promote development in this brother country. .
