The new masters of the city, which fell in the first days of the offensive, brought together the nine Christian bishops this Monday to address them with a reassuring speech, reports one of the participants in the Figaro.

Taking advantage of a few minutes of internet between two power cuts, one of the nine Christian bishops of Aleppo joins us by telephone. It has been a week since his city has been in the hands of Syria's new masters, the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), at the head of the lightning offensive which overthrew the regime of Bashar al-Assad. Monday morning, representatives of the rebel group organized a meeting with Christian leaders of this city, the second largest in the country, where there are 20 to 25,000 Christians including nine bishops. “We talked for two hours this morning. Obviously, they are doing everything to reassure us”indicates this prelate.

The HTS rebels – “who call themselves revolutionaries, liberators of Damascus, or of Syria – today, we no longer use al-Qaeda or Al-Nusra so as not to cause fear” notes the bishop with a bit of circumspection – these rebels took the initiative of this meeting, which was held in one of the bishoprics…
