The Normandy college will reopen its doors on Thursday, an announcement from the management team this morning. The establishment was closed this Monday, December 2 following three outbreaks of arson this weekend. Renovation work will therefore have to be undertaken as quickly as possible to accommodate the students properly. Two suspects were arrested.
Sad sight for the educational teams of the Collège de Normandie, in Nouméa. After several fires broke out during the night of November 29 to 30, the damage was significant in the establishment. Fires that were started from paper bins and fabric armchairs. Staff and teachers met this Monday morning to clean and secure the premises.
But more significant security, electrical and rehabilitation work is necessary to accommodate students in good conditions. Management therefore announced this Monday morning that the establishment will not be able to reopen its doors before Thursday. “You should know that parents are already caught in a complicated equation, between work, home and their children's schooling. It's a hard blow for parents, two weeks before the holidays”assure Stéphane Bour, president of the parents' association.
The Normandy college welcomes 540 young people. If these students are soon on vacation, it is still bad news which adds to an already difficult year. “Sfollowing the riots, there were already orientation courses which could not take place. The patent could not be obtained. We had organized, with the socio-educational center and the college management, the third year ball. Again, this is potentially put on hold. So each time, these are positive elements for the children who cannot be done.”

These fire outbreaks were noted within the CDI, the documentation and information center, in school life and in the office of the director of Segpa, the adapted general and vocational education section.
Despite the intervention of the firefighters, these fires had time to destroy a large part of the equipment. A safety inspection of the southern province was necessary this Monday morning.
However, no theft was observed. Two suspects have already been arrested.
