Many uncertainties for the second round

Everything is still possible in view of the second round. Especially since beyond the classic duels (there are 188 of them), the second round will pit three candidates against each other in 306 constituencies. In five of them, there will even be four candidates in the running next Sunday. However, some candidates could withdraw in order to “block” the extreme right.

The former leader of La France insoumise, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, very quickly announced that an NFP contender who had reached the foot of the podium would withdraw. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal is also committed to this regarding the candidates from his camp who came 3rd, but on condition that it is for the benefit of an opponent who shares “the values of the Republic”.

Emmanuel Macron called on Sunday for a “large rally” against the RN, welcoming a “desire to clarify the political situation” expressed in the first round. “Faced with the National Rally, the time has come for a large, clearly Democratic and Republican gathering for the second round,” said the President of the Republic in a written statement. Secretary of State for the City and outgoing MP, Sabrina Agresti-Roubache announced her withdrawal on Sunday evening, after coming third in the first constituency of Marseille, clearly calling for a vote against the National Rally.

On Sunday evening, the Ipsos institute projected 230 to 280 seats for the RN and its allies, 125 to 165 for the NFP and 70 to 100 for Ensemble.
