An American woman was seriously injured when a parasol came loose and impaled her as she relaxed on a beach. Rescuers had to use bolt cutters to free her.

The moment of relaxation turned into a nightmare. An American woman was seriously injured after a parasol came loose and pierced her while she was enjoying a moment of relaxation on a Florida beach, reports Fox News in an article posted online this week.

The accident happened in Cocoa Beach (USA), where the woman and her family were at the water’s edge.

For reasons that are still unexplained, the rented parasol became destabilized and violently hit the victim’s leg. Alerted by witnesses, emergency services quickly arrived on the scene.

An unusual rescue method

Faced with the situation, the firefighters had to use bolt cutters to separate the pole from the parasol canvas, which was firmly stuck in the woman’s leg.

The victim was then treated by paramedics and transported to a hospital center. His state of health is stable according to a press release from local firefighters. Although this type of accident is fortunately rare, it is not without precedent.

In 2023, a woman in South Carolina died from her injuries after being stabbed in the chest by a faulty umbrella. A year earlier, a Florida teenager vacationing in Massachusetts was also hospitalized after a similar accident.

The investigation into the exact circumstances of the tragedy is ongoing. Local authorities have not yet released any additional information. According to People, “the Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that approximately 3,000 people are hospitalized each year due to beach umbrella-related incidents” in the United States alone.
