Are the right-wing forces in the European Parliament on the verge of a major overhaul? Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced on June 30, according to AFP, that he wanted to form a new European parliamentary group, which would include the Austrian anti-immigration party FPÖ and the movement of former Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis.
“We are taking the initiative to launch this new platform”said the head of the conservative government, during a joint press conference with Andrej Babis and Herbert Kickl, the leader of the FPÖ. This new union, called “Patriots for Europe”, has set itself the missions, among others, of fighting illegal immigration and defending the traditional family.

Welcoming this announcement, the head of the FPÖ, which came first among the Austrian parties during the last European elections, promised “an era of freedom, sovereignty, peace, prosperity and values” for Europe.

In order to be formally recognized as a group in the European Parliament, this alliance will have to include groups belonging to four other countries.
Last Monday, during his visit to Rome to meet with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Viktor Orban failed to finalize an agreement to unite the main European political parties of the national right. These are currently divided between the ECR (European Conservatives and Reformists) led by Meloni and the ID (Identity and Democracy) group, which includes the French National Rally.
