A parasol flies away and impales a woman who was sunbathing on the beach

A terrible accident recently occurred on a beach in Florida, USA. As reported by Fox News, a woman was impaled by a parasol while she was sunbathing peacefully by the water. According to the police, the American woman and her family had rented a parasol to shelter from the sun. For some unknown reason, the parasol came out of its place in the sand and flew away.

The umbrella pole then stuck in the victim’s leg. Alerted, emergency services quickly rushed to the scene to help him. They had to use bolt cutters to separate the parasol’s canvas from its pole because it continued to move even while lodged in the woman’s leg. Our colleagues do not specify the current state of health of the American.

A rare accident

While this type of accident is (thankfully) rare in the United States, it is not unprecedented. In 2022, a 63-year-old woman in South Carolina was killed by a poorly secured umbrella that pierced her chest. According to CBS, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that about 3,000 people are injured each year by umbrellas in the United States.
