Fire breaks out aboard the Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship

With its 365 meters in length, 20 decks and 2,805 cabins, theIcon of the Seas is the largest cruise liner in the world. But since its first official journey in January, the sea monster has already been the scene of drama. At the end of May, a man killed himself by jumping overboard. More recently, on Tuesday, the ship caught fire while docked in Costa Maya (Mexico), reports CNN.

According to a Royal Caribbean spokesperson, the fire was limited to a crew area and was “quickly extinguished”. He spoke of a “minimal” incident which did not cause any injuries. The ship, however, suffered a brief loss of power but emergency power was immediately activated.

Incidents “not common, but not rare either”

The spokesperson did not provide information on the exact location of the fire or how long the power outage lasted. He said minor fires were “not common, but not rare either” on cruise ships. All crew members have been trained to handle such situations.
