Often, we evoke them as a challenge: how many can we cite right away, from memory? Usually three, maybe four. But history has crowned seven, seven Wonders of the world with names as mysterious as they are evocative: the great pyramids of Giza, the hanging gardens of Babylon, the statue of Zeus in Olympia, the temple of Artemis in Ephesus, the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes and the Lighthouse of Alexandria.

If only the pyramids can be visited today, make no mistake: the other monuments on the list are not the products of an eccentric legend. The proof by the menu in The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (Ed. Quanto), carefully researched work by Bettany Hughes.
