Press release: Summer vacation in sight – what to look out for…

THE tour operators hotels and vacation rental providers announce strong demand for the upcoming summer holidays. The Swiss Animal Protection PSA recommends organizing the care of pets in an animal-friendly manner and gives advice on what to pay attention to when traveling with dogs.

Pets such as rodents, rabbits, birds and cats generally stay better at home when they are well taken care of by neighbors, acquaintances or professional pet sitters. They feel good in their usual environment; a change of location or a trip is synonymous with great stress for these animals. If, for example, rabbits and guinea pigs are kept at home in a spacious, animal-friendly outdoor enclosure, this cannot be transported at all. Animals accustomed to a large space should under no circumstances be confined in a smaller cage during the holidays. If small rodents, birds and cats can be housed in an animal shelter or boarding facility in a spacious, animal-friendly enclosure, this is an animal-friendly possibility.

Advice for dog owners

Dogs prefer to travel with their owners whenever the duration of the trip, the means of transport, the distance traveled and the destination allow it. For short trips, city trips, air travel, or trips to places with complicated and restrictive regulations for dogs, it is best to leave pets at home. There they can be looked after by acquaintances, a pet sitter or an animal shelter, so that the trip does not become stressful. When traveling by car, always allow sufficient breaks to allow dogs to be cleaned and given fresh water. In case of heat, never leave dogs unattended in a closed vehicle, even if the windows are open. There is quickly a danger of death.

How about a “godfather”?

One thing that pet owners can take care of in time (and not just a few days before the holiday) is the search for a “godfather” or “godmother” for animals. These are close people who establish a relationship with the pet and care for it in times of need – in the event of absence for vacation, illness, accident or death. In this way, pets benefit from an additional reference person. In addition, not all people have the opportunity to have their own pet, but still want to establish a closer relationship with an animal.
