The 25 passengers were heading back to Punjab after a wedding ceremony when the accident occurred. At least 14 Pakistanis invited to the happy event died on the evening of Tuesday, November 12, 2024 after their bus fell into a river in the mountainous north. “The bus was carrying 25 passengers. Only the bride survived the accident. So far, 14 bodies have been found and ten people are still missing,” indicated to theAFP Wazir Asad Ali, one of those responsible for the ongoing rescue operation.

On the bus were the bride and groom and their families. The only survivor was treated in a hospital in the province.

Possible speeding

The accident happened “probably produced due to speeding”, said Naik Alam, a senior local police official. “The driver then lost control of his vehicle on a bend. »

In Pakistan, driving fatalities are particularly high, the fifth most populous country in the world, particularly in hilly and mountainous regions, between poor road conditions, lax regulations and dangerous driving.

Another major problem: the saturation of means of transport, in particular coaches which are often filled to the limit of their capacity and where wearing a seat belt is not a widespread reflex. In fact, road accidents involving a single vehicle are common.

In August, two bus accidents had already left 36 dead in the north of the country.
